Abstract

Cortical responses evoked by a vertical moving sinusoidal grating of fixed spatial frequency and variable contrast were recorded from the occiput. The potentials which resulted from binocular stimulation was on the average the linear vector sum of the responses obtained with monocular inspection of the pattern. A reanalysis of measurements of motion track enlargement (MTE) following monocular and binocular motion stimulation (Johansson, 1960) showed that the MTE for binocular vision could be accurately predicted by the same model. The outcome of the two studies may be closely related since pattern‐reversal visually evoked potentials may be partly produced by movement and direction‐sensitive mechanisms within the brain.
