Abstract

SUMMARY The autobiographical voice of “On Being Fat” is both personal and intended to reflect the experience of American fat women under siege. Written in 1972, the poem is dated in terms of my level of sensitivity to negativity toward my body, yet very current for the continued sociopolitical obsession with “obesity.”
