Abstract

In 1977 the Northern Rockies experienced a 12% increase in total wells drilled compared to 1976. Development of large stratigraphic pools and the search for new reserves of natural gas pushed the number of wells drilled to 1,407 in 1977 compared with 1,103 in 1976. Exploratory success increased from 15.6% to 23.7%; however, development success decreased from 68.2% to 56.0%. At year end, activity was still increasing although rig availability was a limiting factor.
