Abstract

A short survey of recent research and developments in the hydrodynamic domain and their applications in offshore engineering is presented. The survey is limited to the first-order and second-order potential theory of wave radiation and diffraction around a fixed or floating body of arbitrary geometry, which is applied to evaluate wave loads and induced motions. It includes the basic equations with the notion of fairly perfect fluid, the elimination of irregular frequencies and the new formulations of second-order wave loads, and more special features as interaction of multiple bodies, low-frequency loads on a moored system, high-frequency springing loads and dynamic effect of liquid motion in tanks. Emphasis is also placed on the benchmark validation including comparisons with analytical or semi-analytical results and experimental measurements, and applications for LNG carriers, FPSOs, barges, semi-submersibles and Tension Leg Platforms (TLPs).
