Abstract

Sophocles’ tragedy foregrounds Oedipus’s humanistic qualities. Oedipus embodies a human-centered world, showcasing remarkable wisdom in solving the Sphinx’s riddle and unhesitating loyalty to Thebes. Posthumanism’s current state questions the Western humanist tradition, demanding a renewed look at the human values presented in the (post)modern reinterpretations of the myth. By choosing not to take any action, Vlad Zografi’s Oedipus believes he can avoid tragedy in this version of the play. Therefore, the Theban hero attempts to escape his destiny through inaction, a choice that compels a reassessment of what truth and free will represent within the contemporary theoretical framework. In this article, I assess the Oedipal figure’s significance in representing the modern human subject’s crisis within a context of simulacra, post-truth and post-temporality.

Early Performance in a Humanistic Medicine Course as a Predictor of Dental Students’ Later Clinical Performance
  • Aug 1, 2013
  • Journal of Dental Education
  • Linda Pollak Nelson + 3 more

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that dental students' early ability to demonstrate a humanistic approach with patients is associated with later clinical performance. A first-year humanistic medicine course, Patient Doctor I (PDI), at Harvard School of Dental Medicine combines training in conducting the medical interview with human values, placing a high value on strengthening relationships with patients and emphasizing empowerment, respect, and strong communication skills. Retrospective data were collected in the following domains: PDI course evaluations, admissions information, National Board Dental Examination Parts I and II scores, and Promotions Committee and faculty evaluation scores for hand skills and humanistic and interactive patient-student skills. Planned linear contrasts comparisons were performed for each clinical outcome variable. Tests to support the a priori hypothesis of linear relationships between PDI evaluation ratings and clinical performance, defined as hand skills and humanistic and interactive patient-student skills scores, were significant, both at p=0.03. This study demonstrated the feasibility of measuring dental students' humanistic qualities during the first year. Humanistic qualities (PDI performance) during the first year were found to be associated with clinical performance in the third year of dental school.

Commitment, Identity Salience, and Role Behavior: Theory and Research Example
  • Jan 1, 1982
  • Sheldon Stryker + 1 more

The generic, indeed the defining, task of social psychology is to investigate the interrelationships among society, the social person, and social behavior. Every theoretical perspective or framework in social psychology approaches this immense task by narrowing it, by selecting particular dimensions of society, persons, and behavior as especially worthy of attention. While the ultimate goal for social psychology may be a single, unified theoretical framework sufficiently comprehensive to incorporate “all” the “important” aspects, etc., of the defining conceptual variables of social psychology,1 that goal is not in sight. In the meantime, and before the millenium, all social psychological perspectives or frameworks are partial, selective in their approaches to the world they hope to explicate. That assertion is true of symbolic interactionism, the theoretical framework out of which the theory examined in this chapter develops, although perhaps less so than for most contemporary frameworks in social psychology.

MAKING KIN: POSTHUMAN IDENTITY IN ANNE HAVERTY’S "ONE DAY AS A TIGER" AND KAREN JOY FOWLER’S "WE ARE ALL COMPLETELY BESIDES OURSELVES"

Making Kin: Posthuman Identity in Anne Haverty’s One Day as A Tiger and Karen Joy Fowler’s We Are All Completely Besides Ourselves. Through discussions on anthropomorphism, animal research and posthuman sensibilities, this paper intends to analyse how identity is shaped within the human characters so as to account for practices of kinship and to promote a posthuman model that emancipates from the anthropocentric milieu. In the encounter with narratives that have at their core human-animal interactions, we are generally placed in the position to inquire about the development of identity. Paying closer attention to the emergence of new sensibilities within the human subject in relation to the otherness of the animal, we discover that these narratives can have a tendency to instantiate posthuman becomings and introduce characters that transgress the discriminating “line” that is discussed by Margo DeMello. The “line” itself, although operating through a process of othering, is essentially prejudicial as it aids the creation of species hierarchies. Such is the case with Anne Haverty’s protagonist Marty in One Day as a Tiger and Karen Joy Fowler’s character Rosemary in We Are All Completely Besides Ourselves. The human subjects in these narratives enter relations of kinship with their animals and in doing so, they manage to build patterns for kin-making as a key to eradicate speciesism. Therefore, looking at the differing reactions to animal alterity in the eyes of the human, I hope to capture the plurality of these encounters. Article history: Received 27 February 2022; Revised 16 May 2022; Accepted 26 May 2022; Available online 30 June 2022; Available print 30 June 2022. REZUMAT. Înrudirea: Identitatea postumană în One Day as a Tiger de Anne Haverty și în We Are All Completely Besides Ourselves de Karen Joy Fowler.

CHRISTIAN AND MUSLIM ETHICS IN BUSINESS
  • Dec 1, 2023
  • The Annals of the University of Oradea Economic Sciences
  • Ciprian Beniamin Benea + 2 more

By tackling the theme of ethics in business, we underline that some essential principles should be considered in any business at any level. During the centuries, trades and businesses involved Christians and Muslims, reflecting cultural and religious elements. As nowadays economy becomes more and more of a war weapon, it should be noted that, at least for Christians and Muslims, some norms govern any trade or business. Religious traits cannot be eliminated from business as they are rooted in human character. Not only do the Bible and the Quran present such principles, but these religions’ holy books emphasize their importance in everyday life. Man is accountable to God and responsible for his business, and any part of economic life should reflect spiritual values. The paper exemplifies that specific requirements should be applied in business. Both religions are promoted honesty, generosity, and equity. In Christianity and Islam, there is a particular emphasis on protecting the orphan, the widow, the poor, the sick, and the vulnerable. Any business should take this into account. The Bible and the Quran are the ultimate standard and ideals for individuals in association with other members of society. Even if we speak today of a secular society, human values must be reflected from small businesses to multinational corporations. Socio-moral and metaphysical norms and values mainly influence economic systems. Every economic system of the world is different from other economic systems prevailing due to its distinct features. Therefore, if the businesses conducted by Christians and Muslims follow ethical rules, they can contribute to a better global economy.

Building a contemporary model for integrating digital technologies to improve mental health services and wellbeing in public healthcare system in Nigeria
  • Jan 1, 2023
  • Olubumni Fashoto

Background The world is constantly experiencing the outbreak of infectious diseases, social unrest and insurgencies in some areas. The World Health Organization (WHO), together with other regulatory authorities, imposed movement restrictions (locally, regionally and internationally) and other preventative measures to alleviate the catastrophic impact of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The practice of using digital health technologies to provide mental health services has been generally abysmal; however, with the lockdown and restrictions of movement and physical meetings, it became necessary to adapt and utilize available digital technologies to provide mental health services. Meanwhile, prior to the COVID-19 lockdown in most African countries, mental healthcare services were basically provided through physical meetings of patients with their therapists and psychiatrists for various therapeutic and medical care services. The introduction of digital technology to mental health services presents unprecedented opportunities to provide mental health care services remotely to the affected populace. Advancement in information and communication technology is positively changing the way people interact and accomplish tasks across almost every sector of human endeavour and particularly, the health sector. This can circumvent existing delays in accessing mental health services, and the shortage of healthcare professionals, while supporting remote counselling and consultation and improving timely mental health care response between doctors and patients in case of social distancing measures. This is crucial for Nigeria, and other low- and middle-income countries, in order to manage and mitigate the emerging public mental health crisis caused by the outbreak of infectious diseases, social unrests and insurgencies. Aim The aim of this study was to develop a contemporary model for integrating digital health technologies to improve mental health services and wellbeing in the public healthcare system. Methodology The study was guided by two theoretical frameworks; the Health Belief Model (HBM) and Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model. The study adopted mixed-method convergent design to gain participants’ viewpoints on the study. A purposive sampling technique employing the snowball method was utilized in selecting participants for qualitative study, while the proportional stratified sampling method utilizing probability proportion to size (PPS) technique was adopted in selecting participants for the quantitative study to increase the chances of equal representation. Questionnaires were distributed to three hundred and seventeen (317) Healthcare professionals, selected from four psychiatric Hospitals in South-West Nigeria. A total of 16 participants from the four selected psychiatric hospitals participated in the interview. Descriptive analysis and Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) were computed on quantitative data while thematic analysis was employed to analyse qualitative data in the formulation of themes and sub-themes. The result from both analyses was triangulated to provide an overall picture of the study. Findings The study found several challenges with the provision of adequate and efficient services in public mental healthcare facilities in Nigeria, such as human resource challenges, brain drain, lack of infrastructure and strains on Healthcare professionals (HCPs). Findings from the study indicated that digital technologies are sparingly utilized in public mental healthcare service delivery due to lack of policy and framework. HCPs perceive digital technologies to be beneficial to themselves and their clients. The highlighted benefit to patients reduces levels of stigmatization, decreases the financial burden, enhances easy accessibility to therapists, strengthens adherence, mitigates relapse incidences and improves timely intervention. However, HCPs are concerned that the integration of digital technologies with mental health service delivery may prompt unwanted access, compromise patient data security and also, erratic power supply and network challenges could hamper smooth online therapy sessions. However, the integration of digital technologies in public healthcare can improve the delivery of mental health services remotely, on a wide scale, and most importantly can mitigate the impact of pandemic outbreaks and other health emergencies. Conclusion Findings from the study showed HCPs’ knowledge, perception of digital tools, challenges and barriers to the adoption and utilization of digital tools. The findings aid the development of a model that integrates digital technologies into public mental healthcare to improve service delivery in Nigeria. Transition from traditional/conventional space of mental healthcare service delivery to digital space requires a collaborative approach with Computer scientists (i.e. software developers and database administrators), Data scientists, investors, stakeholders and mental healthcare professionals. The proposed model serves as a contemporary framework that Government, policy makers in the Ministry of Health and Management of mental health facilities in Nigeria can adopt which will provide the needed awareness of the benefit of technological intervention. Furthermore, the model can be utilized to revise the existing policies and Standard Operating Procedures in public mental health sector.

Recontextualizing the Dynamics of Kembar Buncing Custom In the Bali Aga Villages of Buleleng
  • Jun 30, 2025
  • International Journal of Multidisciplinary Sciences
  • Komang Wahyu Rustiani + 4 more

This study explores the evolving perception of the kembar buncing custom among the Bali Aga community, where the birth of unlike sex twins was traditionally considered a taboo, believed to bring misfortune and resulting in social stigma, exile, and financial burdens for affected families. In recent years, however, the perception has shifted toward greater inclusivity, with such births increasingly viewed as symbolic representations of harmony between good and evil. The study aims to understand the dynamics of this cultural transformation and its broader implications for preserving Bali Aga identity amid the pressures of modernity. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through observation, non-participatory interviews, document analysis, and focus group discussions (FGDs). The analysis followed the Miles and Huberman model, involving data reduction, data display, and verification to ensure systematic interpretation. The theoretical framework is informed by Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of habitus, which provides tools for analyzing how social dispositions evolve through interactions with structural forces and through the strategic use of various forms of capital: economic, social, cultural, and symbolic. The findings reveal that the transformation of the kembar buncing custom is driven by regulatory adaptation, cultural negotiation, hegemonic resistance, and symbolic reconstruction. Changes in community habitus, shaped by the strategic mobilization of capital by key social actors, have contributed to a shift in customary paradigms. This transformation suggests the need to recontextualize traditional customs within contemporary frameworks, not only to ensure cultural sustainability but also to advance human rights and social inclusion within the Bali Aga society.

Women Navigating the Climate Catastrophe: Challenging Anthropocentrism in Selected Fiction
  • Jul 3, 2021
  • Journal of Literary Studies
  • Jessica Murray

Summary This article explores how two authors represent female characters who engage with the impending climate catastrophe by exposing and challenging anthropocentrism, albeit in very different ways. The selected novels, Weather by Jenny Offill, and The Last Migration by Charlotte McConaghy, were published in 2020 and 2021 respectively. Both novels were met with significant critical acclaim and both announce their central authorial impetuses in their titles. Offill’s main character, Lizzie, lives a life of middle class privilege with her husband and young son in New York while McConaghy’s protagonist, Franny, has lost her husband and child and scrapes a living as she moves between Ireland, Australia and Greenland. I use a theoretical framework that can broadly be described as feminist ecocriticism as a lens for my analysis and I mobilise conceptual interventions by scholars working in a range of fields related to climate change and critical animal studies. I will explore how the female characters in my selected novels navigate the impending climate catastrophe and I will argue that scholars can gain insight into their experiences by paying close attention to how the authors challenge anthropocentrism in their representations of these experiences. In order to work towards staunching the damage human beings are doing to the natural world, we need to build interactions that honour, respect and affirm the lives of all inhabitants with whom we share the earth. The relationships I investigate in this article mostly fall far short of these goals and these failures can be traced back to the stubborn insistence or, at times, unquestioned assumption, that human beings have greater value than the rest of the world we inhabit. This inability to relate meaningfully and empathetically to the rest of the natural world allows humans to wreak the havoc that has resulted in the contemporary climate crisis. I will illustrate that the glimmers of hope that the texts do offer can be found in the instances where the human characters at least attempt respectful interactions with their nonhuman counterparts in ways that honour and affirm the value of their animal lives.

Transitivity and mood in Helon Habila’s Waiting for an Angel and Ngózi Chuma-Udeh’s Forlorn Fate
  • Apr 30, 2022
  • Integrity Journal of Arts and Humanities
  • Madu Bridget Ngozi + 3 more

This study examines transitivity and mood in Helon Habila’s Waiting for an Angel and Ngozi Chuma-Udeh’s Forlorn Fate. It is a textual analysis with particular emphasis on the functional value of the language use in relation to the transitivity system and mood system inherent in the extracted sentences which form the data and their significance. The research design for this study is a descriptive qualitative method of analysis based on some principal approaches to the analysis of a text. The theoretical framework that guides this study is Halliday’s Systemic Functional Theory of Grammar (SFG) propounded in the 1960s which lays emphasis on the functions of language in context of situation. The tool is syntax. The findings of the research show that Habila makes use of suitable actors, processes, goals and appropriate clauses to highlight the portrayal of poverty, disillusionment, misgovernance and political ineptitude under autocracy in Nigeria as portrayed in the work. Chuma-Udeh as a descriptive writer also uses suitable actors, processes, goals and appropriate clauses to capture vividly the grave living conditions of the inhabitants of the Odua Ancient Kingdom and ecological issues in the Niger Delta. The authors conclude that the writers are able to communicate their message powerfully and creditably to the audience. They use appropriate abstract concepts and human characters in the novels as actors and participants. The linguistic structures used in the texts enable the writers to communicate powerfully as well as creditably, both their social and personal experiences.

Human and Nature: Developing Virtues for Environmental Responsive Behaviour
  • Jul 10, 2023
  • Problemy Ekorozwoju
  • Anita Jena + 1 more

The environmental issues such as deforestation, climate change, ozone layer depletion, greenhouse effect and pollution of air, water and soil rises due to unethical activity of human beings and behaviour of humankind. Environmental degradation and the deterioration of human moral values are inter-connected with each other. So, environmental revolution required a transformation in human behaviour. Virtue ethics could be used as an instrument to develop a pro-environmental behaviour. Virtue ethics is primarily concerned with what kind of people we should be, what kind of characters we should have, and how we should act. This directly develops one’s moral character as well as pro-environmental character and behaviour, i.e., wisely use the natural resources; develop the habit to preserve the nature. Virtue ethics would be built to bridge the gap between human behaviour and the needs of environment. This paper emphasizes the implications of virtue ethics to bring changes in human character and behaviour to resolve the current environmental problems.

Analysis on the Path of the Innovation of the Cultural Quality-Oriented Education in University
  • Jan 1, 2015
  • Creative Education
  • Yanling Zhang

We have proposed the concept of the cultural quality-oriented education for university in China, aiming at “improving the students’ aesthetic taste, cultural taste, humanistic quality and scientific quality through strengthening education on the subjects of literature, history, philosophy, arts and other humanities and social science and natural science in university”. However, some colleges and universities tend to be utilitarian with knowledge-based and technique-based status in practice. They use the training mode of one-sided pursuit of employment, and neglect the development of the humanistic spirit. The curriculum is unable to adapt to the actual needs of students of different specialties, and the implementing effect of the cultural quality-oriented courses is below expectation. Only by surpassing this predicament can the cultural quality-oriented education in university be promoted on the inheritance and innovation fruitfully. Under the new situation, the specific path of the cultural quality-oriented education in university should be mainly paved in the curriculum setting, teaching management, learning selection and student evaluation.

Digital citizenship and its role in reducing cybercrimes: A systematic review of contemporary theoretical frameworks
  • May 31, 2025
  • Omdurman Islamic University Journal
  • Abdelnabi Ali

As cybercrimes escalate in scale and sophistication, traditional technocentric prevention strategies fail to address the human and sociocultural dynamics underlying these threats. This systematic review synthesizes contemporary theoretical frameworks of digital citizenship—defined as the ethical, informed, and participatory use of technology—to evaluate its role in reducing cybercrimes. Analyzing 47 peer-reviewed studies (2023–2024) through the PRISMA protocol, the study reveals that integrative approaches, such as cross-curricular programs and AI literacy initiatives, reduce cyberbullying by 34% and phishing susceptibility by 41%. However, critical gaps persist: only 22% of frameworks address generative AI risks like deepfakes, while 83% of research focuses on Western contexts, neglecting Global South threats such as mobile payment fraud. Case studies from Portugal, Kenya, and Singapore highlight the efficacy of scenario-based learning, localized curricula, and public-private partnerships, yet expose systemic inequities: low-income schools face 39% lower compliance with security protocols due to device-sharing, and teacher training gaps leave 78% of educators unprepared for AI ethics challenges. The study underscores the urgency of reimagining digital citizenship as a lifelong, culturally adaptive paradigm. Recommendations include mandating AI auditing in teacher training, funding localized Global South curricula, and establishing oversight mechanisms for ethical public-private collaborations. By bridging these gaps, digital citizenship can evolve into a resilient, inclusive framework capable of mitigating both current and emerging cyber threats in an AI-driven world.

HOVHANNES TUMANYAN: JOURNEY THROUGH EARTHLY TIME AND ETERNITY
  • Oct 6, 2025
  • Scientific bulletin
  • Yeva Mnatsakanyan

The aim of the article is to present the reality that life and real circumstances did not give the great Armenian poet Hovhannes Tumanyan the opportunity to travel simply to see new worlds. Almost all of the poet’s travels were primarily conditioned by a high national mission defined from above and consciously chosen, the consolidation of which is the most important task of our speech. To achieve the goal, we have set ourselves the following tasks: to study the scientific and memoir literature related to the topic and present a map of Tumanyan’s travels, indicating their purposeful and substantive fundamentals, and to emphasize the perfect realizations of the poet’s human character, artistic thinking, and talent during his travels. In conducting the examination, we used historical-comparative, juxtapositional, analytical methods. The continuous process of interpreting and evaluating human values, in particular the historiography of the study of Tumanyan's life and work, brings about the need to revise questions and standards, which is conditioned by the questions posed by the current state of the 21st century, changes in objective and subjective circumstances. At the end of the article, we concluded that Tumanyan's travels, interwoven with each other in a chronological sequence, form an exclusive framework of the poet's biographical trajectory and earthly time, which was then to continue in the realm of cosmic infinity and supra-earthly time. Each of the travels has outlined in a new color the inimitable image of Tumanyan, a devoted Armenian and a national self-sacrificing figure, revealed his thinking and outlook on life, the nourishing source of spiritual creations.
