Abstract
In today's global alarming moment, the concept and idea of sustainable development should be actualized in Serbia again, especially among those sectors and institutions, as well as experts and citizens in the broadest sense, where proper attention is not yet paid to it. Regardless the fact that the concept of sustainable development in Serbia is mentioned at all levels, from individual scientists, laymen, companies, municipalities, to the state level, if carefully analyzed what we hear or read, we will make sure that it is most often used without understanding or incorrectly, that is, it is used as a mantra that minority people know what it substantially means and how important it is today. For this reason, this article in the first part recalls the birth and development of the idea of sustainable development, with an evaluation of its implementation during the development of Serbia in a few last decades. The second part explains and comments several urban activities that represent a critical phenomenon in the development of cities, both from the point of view of their positive impact on growth and development, and from the point of view of negative impact on climate change, resource consumption, declassification of biodiversity, and pollution. The sustainability attribute for each of these activities (industry, architecture, urban planning, construction) clearly indicates the need to change them in the direction of urban sustainable development. Measures from UN studies are also mentioned, as well as limitations and threats to their implementation. The third part deals with the idea of indispensable harmonious and sustainable symbiosis of these activities as the key to urban and global sustainable development.
