Influence of coupling agents on rheological, thermal expansion and morphological properties of recycled poypropylene wood flour composites

In this work, thermal expansion and morphological properties of recycled polypropylene wood flour composites were evaluated in order to verify the effect caused by the usage of a natural oil as coupling agent. The natural oil used as coupling agent was octanoic acid (C8), maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP), widely used in industry but from non-renewable source, was also used for comparison. Composites were obtained by twin screw extrusion and injection molded. The results showed that the addition of octanoic acid and maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene reduced the coefficient of thermal expansion of the composites. The dependence of melt viscosity obeyed the Arrhenius-Eyring expression, and the activation energy values for composite viscous flow were higher than matrix. The composite morphology revels that octanoic acid promotes strong interfacial adhesion between filler and matrix, similar to that observed when maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene were used. Octanoic acid showed similar results when compared with maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene in all properties evaluated, indicating that can be used as an alternative instead of use coupling agent from non-renewable sources.

Synthesis of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) from vegetable oils and free fatty acids by wild-type and mutant strains of Pseudomonas chlororaphis.

Pseudomonas chlororaphis PA23 was isolated from soybean roots as a plant-growth-promoting rhizobacterium. This strain secretes a wide range of compounds, including the antibiotics phenazine-1-carboxylic acid (PCA), pyrrolnitrin, and 2-hydroxyphenazine. We have determined that P. chlororaphis PA23 can synthesize medium-chain-length polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) polymers utilizing free fatty acids, such as octanoic acid and nonanoic acid, as well as vegetable oils as sole carbon sources. Genome analysis identified a pha operon containing 7 genes in P. chlororaphis PA23 that were highly conserved. A nonpigmented strain that does not synthesize PCA, P. chlororaphis PA23-63, was also studied for PHA production. Pseudomonas chlororaphis PA23-63 produced 2.42-5.14 g/L cell biomass and accumulated PHAs from 11.7% to 32.5% cdm when cultured with octanoic acid, nonanoic acid, fresh canola oil, waste canola fryer oil, or biodiesel-derived waste free fatty acids under batch culture conditions. The subunit composition of the PHAs produced from fresh canola oil, waste canola fryer oil, or biodiesel-derived free fatty acids did not differ significantly. Addition of octanoic acid and nonanoic acid to canola oil cultures increased PHA production, but addition of glucose did not. PHA production in the phz mutant, P. chlororaphis PA23-63, was greater than that in the parent strain.

Public health and the role of the nurse: the need for greater clarity.

There is evidence that public health is currently taking centre stage in the challenge to improve the population's health. This represents a change from the 1980s and 1990s where health promotion was the dominant concept among community nurses. Public health means different things to different people and while nurses have a role to play, there is a need to be more precise about their specific contribution. The creation of public health nursing posts across the UK is contribution to this confusion, as there is little emerging consensus as to what professionals in these posts should do. At present, there does not appear to be a dominant strategy or model of working. A preliminary analysis of job advertisements for public health nursing posts indicates a requirement for a 'supercharged' health visitor to work in a specific area to provide a link between the professional and lay communities. The emphasis is on community development with little on population health. Government policy on public health clearly highlights the important role of nurses in contributing to the public health agenda. The current role and function of public health nursing posts may not allow them to be classed as specialist public health nurses/nursing and to provide educational opportunities for nurses to develop the knowledge and skills which will enable them to work alongside medical and other healthcare colleagues in the pursuit of specialist public health practitioner status.

The effect of octanoic acid on the binding of the enantiomers of ibuprofen and naproxen to human serum albumin: a chromatographic implication.

The heats of reaction between the enantiomers and racemates of ibuprofen and naproxen and human serum albumin (HSA) are to be measured with and without the addition of octanoic acid. The effects of octanoic acid on the free energies of interaction between the drugs and HSA is to be determined and compared to that estimated from theoretical equations. The heats of reaction have been measured directly by flow microcalorimetry. The data showed that octanoic acid lowered the 1:1 binding constants for all the drug-HSA interactions investigated. The effect of octanoic acid was greater on the R than on the S forms of the drugs as shown by the differences in free energies of interaction in the presence and absence of octanoic acid. The increased free energy differences for the binding of the enantiomers of both drugs to HSA in the presence of octanoic acid is closer to the value deemed to be necessary for the separation of enantiomers by Davenkov, and shows the importance of the addition of octanoic acid to the mobile phase in the separation of these enantiomers on immobilized albumin columns.

Solutions of alkali soaps and water in fatty acids XI. Correlation between the acid sodium octanoate in the most water-rich part of the L2-phase and the acid soaps in two adjacent phases

The special nature of the outer-most water-rich region of theL2-phase in the ternary system sodium octanoate-octanoic acid-water is evidenced by its somewhat turbid appearance and by the character of its equilibria with adjacent phases. The phase contains aggregated acid sodium octanoate which is dispersed in a very dilute aqueous solution of sodium octanoate. The acid octanoate has the composition 1 NaC8∶2 HC8∶x H2O and is composed of closely packed amphiphilic units, all with the polar groups in the same direction. This acid soap obviously forms double-layered aggregates with the lipophilic hydrocarbon chains pointing inwards and the polar groups pointing outwards towards the surrounding bulk-water. The phase is formed when octanoic acid is added to theL1-phase of the system just above the l.a.c.; in this aqueous solution, the acid reacts with dissolved acid octanoate 1 NaC8∶1 HC8∶x H2O and that results in the formation of the slightly soluble acid soap 1 NaC8 ∶2 HC8∶x H2O that separates as a new phase, the turbidL2 phase. On further addition of octanoic acid, the content of the mentioned acid soap increases until the solution phase is transformed into a liquid crystalline lamellarD-phase with the same acid soap composition. This formation of acid soap 1 NaA∶2 HA on addition of fatty acid to the dilute soap solution just above the l.a.c., has been known for a long time to occur in various systems containing a long-chain sodium soap. However, at suitably low temperatures, the reaction in these systems does not result in separation of the acid soap in the liquid crystalline, but in the solid crystalline state.

Evaluation by a GC Electronic Nose of the Differences in Volatile Profile Induced by Stopping Fermentation with Octanoic and Decanoic Acid to Produce Sweet Wines

Due to their inhibitory effect on the growth and fermentation of yeasts, medium-chain fatty acids can be used for the production of naturally sweet wines. Addition of octanoic acid, decanoic acid or their combinations is able to stop the alcoholic fermentation, reducing at the same time the doses of sulphur dioxide addition needed for the same goal in the classical technologies. Doses in the range of 10–30 mg L−1 of these acids were used, and their effect on the aroma profile of the sweet wines obtained was evaluated by using a chromatographic electronic nose with two columns. Based on the chromatographic peaks, which are considered the sensors of this e-nose, differentiation of the wines treated with octanoic or decanoic acids is easily achieved. The acid doses, the type of acid and also the yeast used for fermentations have all detectable influences on the volatile profiles of the wines. Discriminant factor analysis was applied on the e-nose data to separate the wines obtained with different treatments. Several differences in the content of the volatile compounds were identified and discussed in view of their sensory influences and the impact of treatment and yeast, respectively. Special attention was given to the formation of ethyl octanoate and ethyl decanoate which, at acid additions over 10 mg L−1, are formed in quantities which have a detectable influence on the aromatic profile. Ethyl octanoate and decanoate are produced in direct relation to the dose of the corresponding acids, but the yeast named ST leads to higher amounts of ethyl decanoate while the one named ERSA leads to higher amounts of ethyl octanoate. In accordance with the e-nose results, the aromatic profile obtained by stopping the fermentation with decanoic acid and using the ERSA yeast is more complex, the wines thus produced preserving more of the varietal and fermentation aroma. This research will be continued at an industrial scale.

Korea’s First Manual of Public Health Nursing: A Foundation for Public Health Nursing Practice in Korea

Purpose: This study aims to understand the functions and roles of public health nursing, which played a key role in public health center activities during the formative years of the organizations in Korea. It does so by analyzing the structure and content of Manual of Public Health Nursing, the first of its kind published in Korea, as well as its authors’ records—particularly the U.S. nurse advisors. Methods: Manual of public health nursing was investigated from the cover to the appendix with other related records from the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). Results: The manual was published in response to the expansion of health centers and the increasing need for standardized practice for public health nurses. It includes theoretical and practical guidelines on maternal and child health, communicable disease control, school health, health education, etc. as well as the qualifications of public health nurses. The manual was influenced by U.S. nursing education and international public health manuals. Conclusion: The manual played a critical role in shaping early public health nursing practices in Korea by providing essential knowledge and standardizing public health services. It reflected Korea’s evolving public health system, heavily influenced by U.S. aid and technical assistance. Despite its significance, challenges such as a shortage of trained public health nurses and an underdeveloped administrative structure remained unresolved.

Acid‐etching induced metal cation competitive lattice occupancy of perovskite quantum dots for efficient pure‐blue QLEDs

Low efficiency and spectral instability caused by the surface defects have been considerable issues for the mixed‐halogen blue emitting perovskite quantum dots light‐emitting diodes (PeQLEDs). Here, an in situ surface passivation to perovskite quantum dots (PeQDs) is realized by introducing the metal cations competitive lattice occupancy assisted with acid‐etching, in which the long‐chain, insulating and weakly bond surface ligands are removed by addition of octanoic acid (OTAC). Meanwhile, the dissolved A‐site cations (Na+) compete with the protonated oleyl amine and are subsequently anchored to the surface vacancies. The preadded lead bromide, acting as inorganic ligands, demonstrates strong bonding to the uncoordinated surface ions. The as‐synthesized PeQDs show the boosted photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and superior stability with longer lifetime. As a result, the PeQLEDs (470 nm) based on the OTAC‐Na PeQDs exhibit an external quantum efficiency of 8.42% in the mixed halogen PeQDs (CsPb(BrxCl1−x)3). Moreover, the device exhibits superior spectra stability with negligible shift. Our competition mechanism in combination with in situ passivation strategy paves a new way for improving the performance of blue PeQLEDs.

Expanding the Pharmacist’s Role in Public Health

Today pharmacists are using their clinical skills to serve the community through vaccinations, emergency preparedness and response, drug education, health screenings, medication therapy management (MTM), and counseling services. This article provides a summary of why the pharmacist's role should be expanded in the public health arena. It is essential to realize the capability of pharmacists and further expand their role in the public health arena in order to improve the quality of care and control costs of the nation. Pharmacists are more accessible to patients than any other healthcare professional and are well-trained to further advance the mission of public health: to promote health, wellness and prevention. provide patients with medication information (5). The cooperation between pharmacists and other healthcare providers continues to grow and the acceptance of patient advocacy through pharmacists continues to improve. Although the pharmacist's role in public health has increased, it is important to realize that pharmacists have the ability to play an even larger role in the implementation of cost controls and efficiency to lead to better quality of care. Increasing the healthcare workforce through greater utilization of pharmacists may lead to innovative oppor- tunities to coordinate care and work towards improving the health of the entire population (6). There is extensive literature highlighting the various skills and services that pharmacists may provide, but there is little evidence summarizing the pharmacist's role in public health. This review of the literature aimed to: (1) describe reasons why the pharmacist's role within public health should be expanded and (2) identify potential changes that can be made by pharmacists to assume a greater role in different sectors of public health.

Exploring Public Health's roles and limitations in advancing food security in British Columbia.

OBJECTIVES: This research analyzes the roles and limitations of Public Health in British Columbia in advancing food security through the integration of food security initiatives into its policies and programs. It asks the question, can Public Health advance food security? If so, how, and what are its limitations?METHODS: This policy analysis merges findings from 38 key informant interviews conducted with government and civil society stakeholders involved in the development of food security initiatives, along with an examination of relevant documents. The Population Health Template is used to delineate and analyze Public Health roles in food security.RESULTS: Public Health was able to advance food security in some ways, such as the adoption of food security as a core public health program. Public Health’s leadership role in food security is constrained by a restricted mandate, limited ability to collaborate across a wide range of sectors and levels, as well as internal conflict within Public Health between Food Security and Food Protection programs.CONCLUSIONS: Public Health has a role in advancing food security, but it also faces limitations. As the limitations are primarily systemic and institutional, recommendations to overcome them are not simple but, rather, require movement toward embracing the determinants of health and regulatory pluralism. The results also suggest that the historic role of Public Health in food security remains salient today.
