Abstract

Osmotically sensitive protoplasts of Entomophthora egressa were found in the hemolymph of spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana) larvae which had been infected via the conidial stage of the fungus. This observation indicates that the protoplast stage, first observed when the fungus was axenically grown in tissue culture medium (Tyrrell and MacLeod, 1972, J. Invertebrate Pathol. 19: 354–360) is part of the natural life cycle of the fungus and not solely a response to artificial culture.
