Abstract

AbstractAn attempt is made in this work to develop an observer-based modal H2-optimal controller for active vibration control of laminated composite plates subjected to external excitation. Collocated piezoelectric patches are used as distributed sensors (polyvinylidene fluoride, PVDF) and actuators (interdigitated electrode-piezofiber composites, IDE-PFC) along with multiple point observers. The structural modal model is developed based on finite-element methodology and is coded in a MATLAB environment. Optimal positioning of the sensor/actuator pairs is evaluated based on the H2 norm of the sensor/actuator for a few selected structural modes and the piezo patches are accordingly placed. Response analysis is then carried out for both open- and closed-loop systems, and the effectiveness of the developed model is established. Piezoelectric actuation voltage is also calculated based on the closed-loop performance of the developed system.
