Abstract

Abstract The endophytic diatom, Navicula endophytica, has been observed in plants of the genera Fucus and Ascophyllum. It was found in material from about 20 localities, covering a wide area of the North Atlantic. The diatom occurred regularly as an endophyte in the seaweeds which were investigated at three localities in Norway, but no seasonal variation could be discerned. This investigation is based mainly on receptacles and tips of F. vesiculosus, F. serratus, and A. nodosum. Cytological and morphological studies have been carried out. N. endophytica is always to be found in the intercellular substance within the host plant. Observations on another diatom, Cocconeis scutellum, are included and compared wherever possible.
