Abstract

The cultivation of the pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera, has been successful in Dongonab Bay since 1904. In 1969 a massive mortality swept the bay, followed by another in 1973. The cause of the 1969 mortality remains unknown but the latter mortality has been investigated. Studies of the environmental conditions, parasites, trace metal poisoning and microbial diseases suggest that the cause of the 1973 mortality was probably an unidentified spherical parasite.
