Abstract

A number of regions in Europe were colonized after the Last Glacial Maximum as they became ice-free. The Alps constitute the largest and highest of these areas. The focus here is on the processes and timing of Alpine colonization, the correspondence of these processes to models of migration and high elevation adaptation, and the contrast between the southern and northern Alps. The best-studied area is northern Italy, but attention will also be given to Switzerland, Germany, and Austria.
