A sound scattering layer in the warm surface water or at the depth of the summer thermocline has frequently been observed off the southern and western coasts of Newfoundland. The scatterers have not been identified, but are most likely of biological nature. An observation of a diurnal vertical migration of a deeper scattering layer is reported.
