Abstract
Stokes parameters of Na I spectral lines after ion-beam surface interaction at grazing incidences were measured. The as yet unidentified line at 507.1 nm showed opposite polarization to that normally found in such experiments. Measurements after ion-atom collisions with charge state separation indicate that this line is a member of the neutral Na I-spectrum. Together with an unpublished calculation by Weiss of inner shell-excited term energies of Na atoms the analysis of the polarization suggests the line to stem from a transition between the inner shell-excited terms 3s3p 4D 7 2 − 3s4s 4P 5 2 of neutral sodium.
