Abstract

Discontinuous magnetization caused by the Barkhausen effect was investigated by using a sensitive pulsed magnetometer available down to 10 -4 emu. An amorphous ferromagnetic ribbon was cut small (0.3 mg) to limit the total number of the domain wall inside. The energy necessary for domain wall motion was estimated at 0.3 J/g for the most probable occurence at RT. The fractal dimension of the emf waveform caused by the Barkhausen effect with respect to magnetic field was found to be ∼ 1.6.
