This article continues the analysis of selected historiographical works in terms of their authors’ perception of the role of women in the events they describe. This part examines the image of women in the works of a Syrian monk called Pseudo-Zachariah and Evagrius, a lay advocate from Antioch. Finally, there are conclusions summarising both parts of the article.

The article deals with John Hermann Randall’s theory of history, namely, the philosophical account of what it takes for an object to be a historical object. The goal of the article is to highlight the deep connections existing between Randall’s philosophical views on history and the writing of history, heavily indebted to Dewey’s and Woodbridge naturalism (the so-called Columbia Naturalism), and his historiographical work. In the first section, I briefly sketch some major aspects of originality of Randall’s historiographical work, as well as the intellectual context to which he belonged. In the second section I lay out the most important features of Columbia Naturalism. In the third section I discuss in detail Randall’s theory of history, focusing on its ontological, epistemic, and epistemological features. In the fourth section, I confront Lovejoy and Randall’s historiographical works in order to show how philosophical theories affect historiographical practices.

Historiographic works on the history of cinema play an important role in preserving knowledge about the development of this art form. They not only document the key stages of the evolution of cinema, but also provide an opportunity to analyze it as a cultural phenomenon that is closely intertwined with the history of mankind. Historiographic works on the history of cinema cover the study of the development of cinema as an art, a means of communication and an industry. They reflect various aspects of its formation: socio-cultural influences, technological breakthroughs, genre transformations and the role of cinema in a historical context. However, a thorough analysis of historiographic sources on the study of the history of the evolution of cinema in the context of considering the stages of the development of science and technology has not been carried out before. The aim of the study is to investigate the state, completeness and reliability of the study of the history of the development of cinema in the context of considering the stages of the development of science and technology, based on the analysis of historiographic sources, the achievements of predecessors, and modern methodology. The objective of this article is to analyze historiographical sources that consider the magic lantern, the camera obscura, and the shadow play as key precursors to cinema. The magic lantern, the camera obscura, and the shadow play were key milestones in the development of cinema, as they developed techniques for manipulating light and shadow, creating the illusion of movement, and projecting images. They became important precursors to cinema, providing the conceptual and technical foundations that allowed cinematic technologies as we know them today to emerge. All three devices actively used the manipulation of light and shadow to create visual effects that became the basis for cinema. Each of these devices allowed for technical innovations in the use of lighting, projections, and images that were later adapted in cinematic technologies such as projectors and motion pictures. All of these technologies helped popularize the idea of using optical effects and media for a mass audience, which was important for the emergence of cinema as an industry. Historiographical works devoted to the magic lantern, the camera obscura, and the shadow play focus on the study of these inventions as important precursors to cinema. They laid the foundations of visual art that uses the play of light and shadow, and influenced the development of technologies for creating the illusion of movement.

This monographic section assembles in a widely re-elaborated way the reports presented during the workshop The trade of Writing History: the Birth and Evolution of the Historiographic Job between 13 th and15 th Century that took place in Potenza in April 2016. In the following essays it is recalled a wide chronological period focusing on three moments where a meeting between high cultural education of the writers and historiographical works took place. The path starts at the beginning of the 13 th Century with the analysis of the chronicle of Boncompagno da Signa, magister of ars dictaminis who wrote when the secular chroniclers of the same years had a professional education that included the rhetoric study. In the second stage attention is given to the writings of Albertino Mussato, crowned poet and historian in the Padua University, who tried to use in the historiographical contest the renewed knowledge of the Latin literature reached at the threshold of the 14 th Century. The arrival point is made by the analysis of historiography writend in the Neapolitan court of Alfonso il Magnanimo during the forties of the 15 th Century, when Lorenzo Valla and Bartolomeo Facio, beyond composing the historiographical works, clashed in a harsh controversy that had as its object in the correct way of writing history

Chinese Charm and Personages in Malay Historiography
  • Dec 7, 2021
  • Malay Literature
  • Jelani Harun

Historiographical works are an important source in tracing the early interactions between the Malays and Chinese, through the depiction of certain personages. Furthermore, the Malay society's knowledge about China is presented by the writers through charming descriptions of Chinese customary practices, traditions and arts. At the same time, an assessment of the relationship between the Malays and Chinese, as presented in historiographical works, reveal many mythical elements whose existence requires explanation. This raises many questions concerning the existence of Chinese personages and Chinese presence in Malay historical writings, and to what the extent these accounts are true. This article will discuss these issues by examining selected historiographical works in Malay literature and related historical records. The discussion is based on an intercultural approach to Malay literature and its relevance to the present time.

A Tale of Hybrid Identities: Notes on Ibn Taghrībirdī’s Textual and Authorial “Self-Fashioning”
  • Mar 21, 2021
  • Mamlūk Studies Review
  • Rihab Ben Othmen

The life trajectory of Ibn Taghrībirdī and his career has stirred considerable curiosity and interest among medieval historians and modern researchers. Through their biographical depictions and pointed analysis, they all endeavor to construct a comprehensive rendering of his various historiographical undertakings. Only a few decades after his death in 874/1470, a number of medieval historians began to trace his life-story and career, including al-Sakhāwī (830–902/1427–97) and al-Ṣayrafī (819–900/1416–95), who shed a critical light on his works. The subsequent generation of sixteenth-century historians, showed a more positive assessment of his achievement in the field. Under the pen of Ibn al-ʿImād al-Ḥanbalī, Ibn Taghrībirdī appears as one of the greatest historians of his time. Later, the 1792 publication of a first edition of his Mawrid al-Laṭāfah sparked renewed interest in him and his other works came to the attention of European scholarship through annotated editions and translations. To better ascertain the value of his historiographical works, several attempts to contextualize his writings were made in the twentieth century. Despite decades of extensive research on Ibn Taghrībirdī, few studies have evolved beyond treating his historiographical works as mere “containers of facts” or contextualizing the man and his oeuvre against a complex socio-political background. We are left with a wide-open lane for inquiry to bring a new impetus to his life-story and achievements in historical writing. To help plot a new way forward, the current article will question “dominant narratives” related to Ibn Taghrībirdī’s life and historiographical contributions. What we mean by “dominant narratives” in this context is the bulk of medieval, stereotyped representations and the modern assumptions that engage with his individual trajectory and career, and in which he was regarded as a member of the awlād al-nās or else as a semi-official court historian.

Jubilees in the hellenistic context
  • Jan 1, 2007
  • Cana Werman

This chapter examines the familiarity of Jubilees , written in Hebrew, in the land of Israel, with the Hellenistic world and with Hellenistic Jewish literature. Interest in chronology is a definitive characteristic of the Hellenistic age, which explains the efforts by the author of Jubilees to calculate epochs and years. The chapter addresses two broad areas: Jubilees ' knowledge of Hellenistic science, as evidenced by its map of the world, and of Hellenistic literature, particularly historiographical and philosophical works. It shows how Jubilees utilized its familiarity with Hellenizing trends in order to rebut them. There is a fragmentary description of the division of the world among Noah's sons in the Genesis Apocryphon , with instructive parallels to Jubilees . Hellenistic Jewish literature was concerned with the affirmation of both Hellenism and Judaism, attempting to combine or at least to harmonize them. The chapter focuses on works similar in nature to Jubilees , historiographic works. Keywords: Genesis Apocryphon ; Hellenistic Jewish literature; historiographic works; Israel; Jubilees ; Judaism; Noah

The history of microbiologist Z.V. Ermoleva’s scientific activity: a brief overview of soviet historiography
  • Nov 29, 2019
  • Samara Journal of Science
  • Aleksandr Vladimirovich Gorshenin

The paper attempts to analyze the key lines of the soviet historiography in the coverage of scientific and organizational activities of Zinaida Vissarionovna Ermoleva, as well as to characterize the degree of information content of publications on the problem. Z.V.Ermoleva (18981974) is a famous soviet medical scientist, a microbiologist and a bacteriogenic, a winner of the Stalin prize I degree, an honored worker of science of Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, a professor, a doctor of medical sciences, an academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR. Her scientific and practical activities helped to save thousands of people from death. One of the most famous achievements of Z.V.Ermoleva was the invention of the first domestic antibiotic penicillin-krustosin and the establishment of its industrial production in the harsh years of the Great Patriotic War. There were also numerous works on the study of cholera vibrions, interferon, lysozyme, various types of antibiotics and their combinations. Z.V.Ermolevas life as well as the history of her research activities are not well reflected in scientific literature. Unfortunately, no historiographical work has been published on the history of this amazing woman scientist. This historiographical review is not exhaustive; it should be perceived as a ground for a further study of her scientific work. Due to the specificity of the subject under consideration, the historiographical review is based on the problem principle.

This book examines ancient Jewish discourse on slavery in the context of Graeco-Roman literary, legal, and documentary writings and on the basis of the social, economic, and political circumstances under which Jews lived. It shows that for ancient Jews just as for Greeks and Romans, slavery was an everyday experience whose existence was taken for granted, whose practicalities were discussed by legal scholars, and which was repeatedly alluded to in literary, philosophical, and historiographic works. In late antiquity, when the employment of slaves in agriculture was supplemented by other types of labour, domestic slavery prevailed. The image, function, and treatment of slaves within the ancient Jewish household are analysed alongside slavery's role within the ancient Jewish economy. Slavery also had a large symbolic significance in antiquity. The particular ways in which Jews used slave metaphors are very revealing with regard to the religious, social, and political concerns of ancient Jewish society.

This dossier is the result of an invitation from the Archivo del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores y Culto (AMREC) to participate in a debate about our work in this repository (our research topics or problems, what materials of AMREC we used, how was our daily practice there) and what impact did it have in our work plans (what data did we find in those sources, did they transform our initial concerns, did they give us new answers to old questions). After this meeting, we invited other colleagues who had gone through a similar process to write down their experiences so that we could recognize differences and similarities in the historiographic work.
