O áudio invisível: uma análise ao podcast dos jornais portugueses

Desde os primórdios da internet que o som nos conteúdos jornalísticos ocupa um lugar secundário ou acessório. O subaproveitamento do som no ciberjornalismo tem sido reconhecido por académicos e profissionais, e só mais recentemente os jornais portugueses parecem ter-se apercebido das potencialidades do som e começado a produzir conteúdos sonoros exclusivos que distribuem em podcast. Este estudo incide em três jornais portugueses de informação geral (Público, Expresso e Observador), os únicos em que foram encontrados podcasts atualizados. Nesse sentido, serão analisados os produtos sonoros disponibilizados nos respetivos sites dos três jornais, nas suas contas no Soundcloud e no iTunes. O objetivo é caracterizar o áudio em podcast destas publicações para perceber como um jornal em ambiente digital desenvolve produtos sonoros e se contém elementos distintivos que possam revelar uma identidade própria. Perante as possibilidades do aproveitamento do áudio e do podcast uma das conclusões deste estudo é a de que depois de um momento de tímido investimento nos conteúdos áudio, de avanços e recuos na última década, os jornais começaram finalmente, a apostar no som embora ainda de forma exploratória e muito próxima do produto radiofónico.

AI-assisted audio-learning improves academic achievement through motivation and reading engagement

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming education by enabling the creation of innovative learning resources that may cater to diverse learning needs. Students with common forms of neurodiversity, such as ADHD, often face unique challenges in higher education that are not adequately addressed by current educational resources. One potentially helpful resource is audio content, which provides a flexible and accessible supplement to traditional educational materials. While audio content, such as podcasts, is widely popular, its effect on academic achievement remains underexplored. This pre-registered randomized controlled trial investigated the impact of AI-assisted audio-learning modules on academic achievement, with a particular focus on the mediating roles of motivation and reading engagement. Results showed that the audio-learning modules increased student motivation and reading engagement. Importantly, audio-learning driven increases in motivation and reading engagement boosted academic achievement. Furthermore, students with greater ADHD symptom severity particularly benefited from the audio-learning modules, as they played a crucial role in determining course success. Together, this study highlights the potential of AI-assisted audio-learning modules as a valuable tool in digital education environments, catering to diverse learning needs and improving educational outcomes. • AI-assisted audio-learning modules enhance student motivation and reading engagement. • These increases in motivation and reading engagement boosted subsequent academic achievement. • AI-assisted audio-learning modules help mitigate the negative effects of ADHD symptoms on academic achievement. • AI-assisted audio-learning is a valuable tool that supports flexible and diverse learning needs.

Designs of Meaning: Tools for Digital Storytellers

As the creation of digital texts flourishes in and out of the classroom, new strategies for composition are needed. Digital stories are multimodal by nature; they communicate meaning through multiple media, especially the combination of text, audio, image, animation, video, and interactive content forms. Kress, Van Leeuwen, Wysocki, Ball and other multimodal scholars believe that as we see writing transition to the “logic” of the senses, new spaces and new approaches are necessary. DeVoss & Selfe (2002) argue for new “rhetorical positionings” for teachers of writing in digital environments— to “help students explore, develop, and communicate more effectively in them” (Devoss and Selfe, p. 146). It is clear that as both teacher and student navigate these mediated spaces, new approaches are needed for the composing and designing of multimodal texts. Our webtext, a collaboration between teacher and student, seeks to better understand and communicate how multimodal texts rhetorically “work.” A digital storytelling experience involves the central idea or story arc and how it engages the senses and creates meaning through the combination of its form and content. The cards in this project illustrate some of the ways we believe multimodal stories can be shaped. We draw across disciplinary borders— from rhetoricians, philosophers, aestheticians, social theorists, technologists, artists and interaction designers to offer digital storytellers a heuristic to compose and evaluate multimodal works (and bridge the gap between theory and practice).

Promotion of freelance services in the digital environment

The article analyses the concept of freelance (temporary, project employment) within the framework of new approaches to employment and changes in the perception of remote and hybrid forms of employment by society and business after the COVID-19 pandemic. The following segments of the labour market where freelancing is the most common element are considered: copywriting, law, software development, design of buildings and structures, creation of graphic, audio and video content, consulting, provision of expertise, tutoring. The portrait of a freelancer is studied in detail according to such characteristics as the region of residence, sex, average age, the share of “real” freelancers and the share of part-timers, experience of interaction with freelance platforms, tax status, single and team players, the reasons for choosing freelancing as a form of employment, the most valuable component of freelancing, the disadvantages of freelancing as a form of employment and motivation of freelancers. The main methods of promoting freelance services in the digital environment are identified: a portfolio site, active maintenance of a professional profile in social networks and its advertising, registration on aggregator sites, freelance and human-cloud platforms. The main element of the portfolio site is highlighted – the works performed by a freelancer (texts, photographs, graphics and similar materials) – along with the key factors that a freelancer needs to consider when creating and maintaining a portfolio site and the most common mistakes

Gestural Control of Digital Audio Environments

In a traditional musical situation based on the strict use of acoustic instruments, human gesture usually produces sound. The relationship between gesture and sound is unique, it is a cause to effect link. In computer music, the possibility of uncoupling gesture from sound is due to the fact that computer can carry out all the aspects of sound production from composition up to interpretation and performance. Real-time computing technology and development of human gesture tracking systems may enable gesture to be introduced again into the practice of computer music, but with a completely renewed approach. There is no more need to create direct cause to effect relationships for sound production, and gesture may be seen as another musical parameter to play with in the context of interactive musical performances.

Content Marketing as a Tool for Promoting Mass Media Brand

With the rise of social media, content marketing has become one of the essential tools for achieving success in online marketing campaigns. Successfully promoting an organization through the free distribution of useful content that meets user needs builds trust in the brand and increases its expertise. Business promotion using Mass Media began in 1924. At that time, the American company Sears launched its own radio program aimed at farmers. In the 21st century, the media began to actively use content marketing tools to attract audiences to their Internet resources and thus increase awareness of their own brands. This article examines content marketing as a tool for promoting a media company in the digital environment. The author analyzes the content of the media with valuable (often at the everyday level) information for the consumer, which is good to share on social networks (stories - useful household tips; online tests; posts on social networks of media companies with images of animals, natural phenomena) etc. Today, ideas about the functions of the media in society have transformed. The audience began to be viewed not as a passive recipient, but as a communication partner. The author comes to the conclusion that in the condition of traditional media crisis in the Internet space, traditional methods of creating media products and marketing technologies begin to interact harmoniously. Gamification in the context of media practice significantly influences the way journalistic content is presented and how it is perceived. A variety of Mass Media actively use entertaining, “light” content, focusing on attracting a larger number of users, due to which the quality of published information often suffers. Content marketing is also actively used by healthcare companies to convey their strengths, missions, and values.

were outside North America and Europe. Finally, when it comes to career stage, 3,478 sources provided data. Of these, 2,158 (62%) identified as established in their careers -including sources, such as professors and those who hold tenure, and non-academic ones with senior roles. Some 18.8% of sources fell in the 'early career' category, including graduate students, postdocs and non-tenured faculty members, compared with 19.6% previously. Around 19.1% fell into the 'other' category, which includes people in non-academic environments, such as industry, campaign organizations and policy. This group's share in Nature's journalistic content has increased from 12.5%. There are some caveats to our analysis. These data were gathered by Nature's journalism teams in North America, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. They do not include journalistic content commissioned by our other offices. Nor do they include content written by external authors, such as World Views and Careers columns. Furthermore, The latest data are in on the diversity of people interviewed for the journal's News, Features and Careers articles, and audio and video content.

Transformation of diplomatic protocol and etiquette under the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused unprecedented transformations in all areas of international communication, particularly in diplomatic protocol and etiquette. This article explores the impact of global public health restrictions on the accelerated digitalization of diplomacy, which ultimately led to the emergence of new practices such as “Zoom etiquette” and hybrid formats of interaction. It examines the process by which diplomatic institutions adapted to remote communication, the simplification of traditional ceremonial norms, and the challenges related to maintaining professional conduct, security, and intercultural sensitivity in online environments. It has been established that digital diplomacy, which initially emerged as a forced solution, has shaped a new reality in which state representatives must combine both technological and symbolic aspects of diplomatic practice. Particular attention is paid to the impact of the absence of non- verbal cues, the complications of conducting informal negotiations, and the importance of visual representation during online summits. The paper also addresses the emergence of hybrid etiquette norms for online/offline meetings, the growing cybersecurity threats, and the evolution of business dress codes under pandemic conditions. Based on real- life examples and academic research, the authors argue that the pandemic not only transformed the tools of diplomacy but also initiated a fundamental rethinking of its core values. The researchers emphasize that the formation of new protocol norms in the digital environment should be seen as a long-term trend requiring international coordination and further academic reflection. Special attention is given to the prospects of developing international standards in the field of digital diplomacy, capable of combining the efficiency of virtual formats with the value of physical presence and symbolic gestures in intergovernmental dialogue. In conclusion, the COVID-19 pandemic acted as a catalyst for innovation in diplomatic protocol and etiquette, initiating a new stage in the evolution of diplomacy based on the integration of digital tools and the adaptation of traditional norms to the challenges of a globalized world. The novelty of this study lies in identifying the phenomenon of “online etiquette” as a distinct element and in proposing conceptual approaches for understanding its role in contemporary diplomatic practice.

The boom of the computer industry contributed to the development of the electronics industry, an effective network of computer communications in the educational, social, banking and interregional telecommunications. Many new ICTs have emerged with the advent of the Internet, which is increasingly used in the academic and media field. The purpose of the article is to show the transformation of the development of mass media in the era of digital technology. Digital technology has not bypassed the sphere of higher education. The Internet, new media and new digital technology have revolutionized the educational process of training future journalists. Disciplines began to emerge that correspond to the new age of the digital era. Currently, the competition between traditional and new media, network media communities has intensified. Increas-ingly, print and electronic media use digital technologies of new media and social networks themselves in their work. A new feature of the media is becoming more and more apparent – as a form of community organization evidenced by social networks, WhatsApp, there has been a turn towards digital creativity in the media. The digital media environment creates some conditions for meaningful transformations of forms and ways of realizing authorship. There is a need to study the nature of changes in journalistic activities. The structure of media consumption has changed, and journalistic content has been trsformed on the Internet, in a mobile environment.

Semantic Search Engine Optimization in the News Media Industry: Challenges and Impact on Media Outlets and Journalism Practice in Greece

In today’s digital media environment, search engines constitute a significant gateway to news and an important source of traffic for online news outlets worldwide, identifying the significance of top rankings in search results. In this context, search engine optimization (SEO) has entered newsrooms as an essential element of disseminating the content of online media organizations, creating new practices and challenges for media professionals. However, the transition to the Semantic Web (SW) and the development of major search engines in recent years have led to the emergence of Semantic SEO as a new approach to old SEO practices, creating at the same time new challenges for the news media industry. This study investigates the application of Semantic SEO inside newsrooms and its impact on journalism and news media organizations. Drawing upon a series of semi-structured interviews with Greek SEO experts and a systematic review of the notion of semantic search and the corresponding semantic SEO technologies, the objective of this work is to present an analysis of how Semantic SEO affects news media and journalism content as well as to identify some of the technological practices that could contribute to enhancing the discoverability of news content in the changing context of online search.

Augmented Reality Learning Media for Student Engagement in Literacy Classrooms

Background: Literacy learning in elementary schools frequently relies on conventional approaches that limit student participation and engagement. Specific background: Initial observations showed students’ passive responses, low motivation, and limited exposure to digital media in literacy activities. Knowledge gap: Existing studies have not provided development results of interactive Augmented Reality media aligned with early grade literacy needs. Aims: This study aimed to develop Augmented Reality-based learning media and determine its validity, practicality, and ability to foster student engagement in literacy learning. Results: Using the Four-D development model, expert validation indicated very high feasibility, teacher and student responses demonstrated strong usability, and classroom implementation showed high levels of affective, cognitive, behavioral, and interactive engagement. Novelty: The media integrates visual–audio literacy content and real-time interaction tailored for second-grade learners. Implications: Findings suggest the media can serve as an innovative classroom resource and may be expanded for broader subjects, grade levels, and digital learning environments. Highlights Media demonstrated strong validity and practicality based on expert and user evaluation. Classroom implementation showed high student engagement across multiple engagement dimensions. Analyze the Role of Generative Artificial Intelligence in Shaping Public Opinion and Democratic Processes

Generative artificial intelligence has rapidly emerged as a transformative technology capable of producing highly realistic text, images, audio, and video content. Advanced generative models such as large language models and diffusion-based image generators are increasingly integrated into digital platforms including social media, news generation systems, and automated communication tools. While these technologies offer opportunities for innovation, creativity, and information accessibility, they also raise significant concerns regarding their influence on public opinion and democratic processes. In contemporary digital societies, public discourse and political participation are heavily shaped by online information environments. Generative artificial intelligence systems can produce persuasive political narratives, automated commentary, and synthetic media that may influence citizens’ perceptions of political issues, candidates, and public policies. The growing ability of generative artificial intelligence to produce large volumes of realistic content introduces potential risks related to misinformation, manipulation of public discourse, and erosion of trust in democratic institutions. Automated generation of political messages, deepfake videos, and targeted information campaigns may alter the dynamics of political communication and electoral processes. Consequently, understanding the impact of generative artificial intelligence on democratic governance has become an important area of interdisciplinary research. This study analyzes the role of generative artificial intelligence in shaping public opinion and democratic processes. The research develops a conceptual model that examines the relationships between generative artificial intelligence content exposure, perceived information credibility, misinformation risk, and democratic engagement. Data were collected from digital media users, political communication experts, and information technology professionals. Structural Equation Modeling using Smart Partial Least Squares was applied to analyze the relationships between constructs. The results indicate that exposure to generative artificial intelligence generated content significantly influences perceptions of information credibility and increases the risk of misinformation within digital communication environments. However, media literacy and regulatory governance mechanisms play important roles in mitigating the negative effects of automated content generation. The study contributes to research on digital democracy and artificial intelligence governance by providing empirical insights into how generative artificial intelligence technologies shape political communication and democratic participation in the digital age

Losing Sight of Atmospheric Sounds in Televised Nature Documentary

The production of soundtracks for televised nature documentaries involves complexities in balancing the audience's sonic perceptions and emotions with audio content and scientific rigour. In addition, soundtracks need to be congruent with audience expectations and commercial imperatives. Popular televised nature documentaries often appear to be narrative melodramas with environmental soundscapes submerged by narration and music. This paper examines the correlations between perceptual agency, educational practices and production constraints with regards to sound production in nature documentaries. The purpose is a clarification surrounding the causative factors and results of the curious neglect for the sound of our natural world within an industry dedicated to the sensory portrayal of nature.
