Abstract
The present article studies the growth processes, and how the planning and management of public policies had integrated the objectives of development and sustainability in the city of Jundiaí, emphasizing the environmental conditions for the improvement of the populations’ quality of life. A series of actions focusing the concept of sustainability had been identified between the years of 1995 and 2005, period of this study, as well as the waste selective collection, the sewage treatment and the creation, of the River Jundiaí committee.The city evolution in last the ten years has as its main explanation the investments in infrastructure and strategic planning. This research was based on documents and interviews of public managers, business leaders and leaderships of civil associations that had personal involvement with the city development process during the studied period.

Summary
Muitos municípios têm reunido suas lideranças políticas e as principais forças da sociedade civil para o debate de agendas e a elaboração de planos de desenvolvimento. Muitas cidades do estado de São Paulo experimentaram significativo crescimento em suas economias, onde os segmentos industriais, de comércio e de serviços proporcionam emprego, renda e qualidade de vida aos seus habitantes. O crescimento populacional e a intensa atividade empresarial, bem como a situação geográfica que propicia fácil acesso a grandes cidades como São Paulo e Campinas, preocupa a sociedade local que começa a se mobilizar para que não se degrade esse ambiente de crescimento e que a qualidade de vida de seus moradores seja preservada. Diante desse cenário e contexto, estudamos o fenômeno do crescimento e do desenvolvimento local, seus limites, suas potencialidades, as razões que levaram um conjunto relevante de empresas a se instalarem em Jundiaí, bem como as ações realizadas para preservar o meio ambiente e a qualidade de vida dos moradores da cidade
