Abstract
In the 19th century, many traveling artists illustrated narratives of their explorations in the New World, shaping a large comparative inventory of differences. Linking text and image in Jean Baptiste Debret and Johann Moritz Rugendas’ Picturesque Voyages to Brazil, this article seeks to understand the visuality created by them, especially concerning the enslaved people. Their albums define ways to describe the landscape and its inhabitants, delimiting spaces in the expected young country civilizing march.

Detenho-me, então, nos diários de viagem do bávaro Johann Moritz Rugendas e do francês Jean Baptiste Debret, dois artistas que dedicaram grande parte de seus trabalhos ao registro da população negra no Brasil oitocentista e, cuja obra, ainda hoje ilustra de forma recorrente publicações que referenciam o imaginário de então, desde livros didáticos a documentários diversos.
Certamente o artista não estava preocupado em estabelecer semelhanças ou diferenças entre os indivíduos, mas em destacar uma função exercida por trabalhadores negros que englobavam escravizados, livres e libertos.
