Abstract

When stroke occurs in the Perianesthesia setting it is a potentially devastating event. Rapid recognition and management are key to decreasing disability. For many patients the risk of long-term stroke effects outweighs the risk of surgical bleeding and they will be eligible for intravenous (IV) alteplase or mechanical thrombectomy. These interventions greatly improve their chances for a meaningful recovery but require time-sensitive actions on the part of the perianesthesia nurse.
