Abstract
The main aim of the paper is to investigate the possibility of substituting the thick and heavy thermal mass external walls used in Mediterranean countries by thin and light thermal mass ones whilst maintaining similar comfort levels throughout the year. To make this substitution the use of PCM (phase change materials) panels incorporated into external wall structure are considered. The results show that inner temperature swings decreases remarkably in the wall with PCM. On the other hand, there is time shift between PCM wall temperature oscillations and those of the standard heavy concrete wall. This shows the ability of PCM to increase the thermal comfort of buildings.
