Abstract

The issue of protection and protection co-ordination is of increasing importance due to the vulnerability of electronic equipment to voltage surges. In order to properly co-ordinate the different protection units of a protection system, all the different parts must be considered in the design process. This paper presents models for the varistor, the gas discharge protector and the installation cable, and these models have been implemented in the software ATP-EMTP. The models have also been used for simulation of complex surge protection circuits and the results are shown to be in good agreement with measurements.
