Abstract

Preliminary results on the stability of an oblate 'shell-orbit' model of a hot stellar system with an axial ratio of 5:1 and which appears to undergo several instabilities at the same time. Even a very flattened mode, although strongly unstable, evolves into a final system that is more flattened than observed elliptical galaxies. It is shown that violation of the positive-temperature conditions does not imply the existence of a spherical instability. 11 refs.
