Abstract

AbstractWith the various distinctive applications of microalgae, microalgae slurries have been extensively used in biogas and biofuel production. During these processes, the continuous hydrothermal pretreatment of microalgal biomass in tubular reactors is a key procedure. This pretreatment involves heat transfer, and the complex nature of the microalgae slurries containing micron‐sized cells flowing through the tube poses a major challenge for industrialization. There is only a scarce amount of literature available on the modeling of microalgae slurries; hence, a computational fluid dynamics model is developed in this study to analyze their heat transfer characteristics. Good agreement was obtained between the model results and experimental values.
