Abstract

Two-dimensional transient numerical computations were carried out for natural convection of air in a vertical cylinder under a strong magnetic field. The aspect ratio (height/radius) of the cylinder was set to be three and, lower cylinder side wall was kept at a lower temperature, upper side wall at a higher temperature with the middle part of side wall thermally insulated. The magnetic coil was placed at various heights around the vertical cylinder. Flow modes and heat transfer rates depended on the coil location and magnetic strength.
