Introduction: Loneliness is a complex and subjective psychological phenomenon associated with adverse mental and physical health outcomes. It arises from a perceived mismatch between desired and actual social relationships and is influenced by cognitive, emotional, and behavioural processes. Despite increasing recognition of loneliness as a public health concern, its underlying mechanisms and associations with mental energy and burnout remain insufficiently explored. Methods: A narrative review of the literature was conducted to synthesize current evidence on the cognitive and affective mechanisms of loneliness, associated risk factors, and available interventions. Relevant peer-reviewed studies were identified through electronic databases and examined to provide an integrative overview of theoretical models, empirical findings, and intervention strategies related to loneliness, mental energy, and burnout. Results: The reviewed literature indicates that loneliness is closely linked to emotional dysregulation, maladaptive cognitive appraisals, and reduced social identity. Both social and emotional loneliness share overlapping affective and cognitive features, despite differing etiological pathways. Loneliness was consistently associated with reduced mental energy, increased psychological exhaustion, and a higher risk of burnout. Existing interventions predominantly focus on enhancing social skills, cognitive restructuring, and increasing social engagement, though their effectiveness varies. Conclusion: Loneliness represents a significant psychological and public health challenge with broad implications for wellbeing, mental energy, and burnout. Addressing loneliness requires a multidisciplinary approach that integrates cognitive, emotional, and behavioural interventions alongside public health initiatives. Improved understanding of the mechanisms underlying loneliness may inform the development of more effective preventive and therapeutic strategies aimed at reducing its burden and associated health consequences.
