Abstract
The daily changes in the quantity of nucleic acid and protein in the blood and midgut were investigated in the silkworm, Bombyx mori (Linnaeus), infected with cytoplasmic-polyhedrosis virus. In the diseased larvae, a distinct decrease of protein in the blood and increases of ribonucleic acid (RNA) and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in the midgut cells were observed. The base composition of the RNA extracted from healthy midguts, diseased midguts, and polyhedra varied. The ratio (G + C)(A + U) [(Guanylic acid + Cytidylic acid)/(Adenylic acid + Uridylic acid)] in the polyhedron RNA was considerably lower, compared with that of healthy midgut, and the same ratio in RNA from diseased midgut showed a middle value.
