Abstract

Pulsed 1H NMR has been used to study hydrogen diffusion in hydrides of Zr 2Ni exhibiting the tetragonal CuAl 2 structure. Spin-lattice relaxation times t 1 have been measured over the temperature range 77 K to 450 K. Relaxation maxima owing to hydrogen diffusion have been found for Zr 2NiH 3 and Zr 2NiH 4.5. Zr 2NiH 2 shows the onset of a diffusional contribution to the relaxation at T < 290 K before undergoing a phase transition leading to a two-phase behaviour above 290 K. The activation energies for hydrogen diffusion range from 0.16 to 0.32 eV atom − 1.
