Nuclear issues of North Korea and Russia's role

Abstract

The world is now free of conflict between ideologies of the East and the West, and all the countries are pursuing mutual prosperity for their national development. However, the Korean Peninsula has not left the cold war tensions yet and it has still been divided for the past half a century. The terrorist attack on 9/11 in 2002, US attack on Iraq in 2003 and religious conflicts between Islamic world and anti-Islamic world are making international society more complicated. In this situation, tension in the Korean Peninsula, caused by nuclear issues of North Korea, launches threats toward the peace of Northeast Asia. Russia plays a critical part to keep peace in Korea. Russia establishes diplomatic relations with the two Koreas. The relationship of North Korea and Russia has kept cooperative relationship in military and economics over the past 50 years. The 6-party conference (US, Japan, China, Russia, South Korea and North Korea) in Peking showed an important role of Russia to solve nuclear impasse. Russia can play an important role in constraining the development of the nuclear weapons in North Korea. North Korean development of nuclear weapons should be checked because its development will cause nuclear armament in Japan. It will also cause South Korea to develop its atomic bombs in the near future, and there will be no expectation of peace in Northeast Asia. Keeping the peace between North and South Koreas will be related to peace of the Northeast Asia - Asia and the international society. Powerful countries, such as Russia, have to help obtain peaceful reunification of Korea Peninsula. As result, Russia will not be an isolated country in international society, but will surely become an actor.
