Abstract

In our attempt to combine the statìstical model for nuclear fission with a one-dimensional, overdamped Langevin description we propose an improved expression for the statistical fission width and a modified dynamical equation. This is based on a consistent treatment of dynamics and thermodynamics by relating the force in the equation of motion and the level-density parameter with the free energy. A simple formula for the fission decay rate is derived which takes into account the influence of the whole potential-energy surface and the deformation-coordinate dependence of the level-density parameter. With model examples we demonstrate the superiority of the new expression over the standard Kramers modified Bohr-Wheeler description by comparing with Langevin calculations.
