Abstract

Level schemes and decay characteristics are presented for all nuclei with mass number A = 58. Experimental data, adopted values, comparisons with theory, and agurments for spin and parity assignments are given. Emphasis is placed on the presentation of level schemes which seem “best” in the light of the data and theoretical ideas available at this time. Inconsistences and discrepancies in the level schemes are discussed. In 58Fe, recent γγ angular correlation studies following thermal-neutron capture have been combined with previous spectroscopic information from (t,p) and (d,p) reaction studies to provide J π-assignments for 17 of the 25 levels below 4.2 MeV. In 58Ni, recent (p,p′γ) and (α,α′) studies have resulted in J π-assignments for 18 of the 27 levels below 4.8 MeV. Moreover, the lifetimes of 19 states in 58Ni are known, mostly from the Doppler shift attenuation method. The present detailed compilation should serve as a basis for further experiments and theoretical calculations. The adopted levels and decay properties are based on data received before July 1969. Data received between July and September 1969 have been “Added in Proof”.
