Abstract

This paper describes a remote cell station (CS) architecture for Personal Handy Phone System (PHS) using asatellite ISDN network and aims to flexibly expand PHS service. The access line of PHS cell stations (CSs) uses the I'-lnterface which adds Location Registration signals for PSs (Portable Stations) to standard ISDN interface signals. The I'-lnterface uses a metallic line cable similar to the standard ISDN interface. Therefore, it incurs the same limitation restricting the distance from a PHS network adapter. We developed a protocol converter which converts I'lnterface signals to standard ISDN interface signals and vice versa. This protocol converter converts the signal specific to the Location Registration information signal in I'-lnterface signal into Permanent Virtual Circuit (PVC) Dch packet signals, and other signals are forwarded without making any changes. It was confirmed that the developed protocol converter can connect a CS with PHS network adapter through the satellite ISDN network without adding or changing existing CS and PHS networks. This protocol converter is effective and offers PHS service to isolated islands and in regions in emergency situations such as natural disasters.
