Abstract

Synthesis of 5,5′-(arylmethylene)bis(4-hydroxythiazol-2(3H)-one) by a three-component condensation of an aldehyde, monochlroacetic acid and thiourea in the presence of a nonionic surfactant Triton X-100 catalyst at room temperature in aqueous medium is accomplished. The advantages are high yield, mild reaction conditions, simple work-up and eco-friendliness. All the newly-synthesized compounds (4a–r) exhibited moderate in vitro antibacterial and antifungal activities.
