Abstract
Achille Delmas also treated patients affected by alcoholism and drug addiction at the “maison de santé d’Ivry”. As his student Itzko Bussel explained in his thesis, Delmas showed his patients a kindly and compassionate demeanor and did not seek to wean them off their drug at all cost. Maurice Utrillo's stay at the facility was beneficial as it ended a long series of forced hospitalizations due to delirious drunkenness. By contrast, Roger Gilbert-Lecomte, who was affected by a severe addiction to opium-containing drugs, sank into a fatal decay after his stay. Antonin Artaud's stay is detailed and a parallel is drawn between the care given to him in Rodez by Dr Gaston Ferdière and Dr Delmas’ more indulgent attitude.
