Abstract

In Madagascar, Galidia elegans tills an ecological niche similar to those occupied by the mongooses of the African continent. They have a roughly similar diet and share the same behaviour pattern of hurdling hard objects between their hindlimbs with species of Herpestes, Atilax, Mungos and Helogale. On the other hand, Galidia elegans appears to be more arboreal and less social than most mongooses. Unlike many Viverrids it has only one young a year.
