Abstract

AbstractThe type of Magnolia odoratissima is reviewed. In the protologue, the type was indicated as Zhou Rengzhang 54 (IBSC), even though this specimen is in serious conflict with the original description, which nicely matches another specimen, Zhou Rengzhang 58 (ISBC). Chen and Zeng maintained that the name M. odoratissima must be treated as a heterotypic synonym of Parakmeria yunnanensis, since this is the species represented by Zhou Rengzhang 54, and they proposed the name M. kwangnanensis for the species represented by Zhou Rengzhang 58. It is concluded here that Chen & Zeng's position is based on an inappropriate interpretation of Art. 9.1 Note 1 of the ICN and ignores the ICN's allowance for the correction of obvious errors in type citation (Art. 9.1 Ex. 2). Therefore, the type of M. odoratissima is Zhou Rengzhang 58 and M. kwangnanensis is a superfluous and illegitimate renaming of M. odoratissima.
