Abstract This paper aims to demonstrate that proper names serve as relevant elements for linguistic research. Latin nomina and cognomina and other onomastic aspects found in five epigraphic texts from the ager Olisiponensis , Lusitania will be studied. The adoption of the morphological process of creating names with Latin onymic suffixes -ius/-us among the local communities is interrelated with the presence of ‘onomastic fossils’ and concise epigraphic texts, with two given names in genitive. This adds new data about the cultural and linguistic influence of Italic migration flows to this region, namely the use and reinterpretation of onomastic elements.

Eminentissimo viro iuris consulto… Rzymscy juryści w tekstach epigraficznych

Among the sources of Roman jurisprudence comparatively little place is taken by epigraphic texts. Apart from several exceptions (e.g. Ulpian, Salvius Julianus), there are no epigraphic sources, mostly sepulchral inscriptions, related to lawyers whose work provided the foundation for Justinian’s Digest . Small inscriptions are found in the provinces, where lawyers were probably held in deeper reverence by local communities. Some inscriptions highlight state positions occupied by a given jurist, rather than his scientific achievement (e.g. Pactumeius Clemens). It seems that the greatest monument to classical jurists was set up by Emperor Justinian as he quoted fragments of their writings along with the name of the jurist and the title of the work from which the excerpt was taken. Although little can be learned about them from epigraphic texts and their tombstones no longer exist, their work eventuated in monuments more permanent than those made of stone or bronze – legal thought which turned into the foundation of modern dogmatics of private law and European legal culture.

This study explores the implementation of sustainable accounting practices in the management of Pasir Panjang coastal tourism by examining how local cultural values and community personality influence sustainability-driven decisions. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews, field observations, and documentation analysis involving local community members, tourism actors, and village government representatives. The findings indicate that sustainable accounting is not only understood as an administrative or financial reporting system, but also as a framework shaped by cultural norms, collective identity, and local wisdom. Elements such as communal responsibility, environmental awareness, and traditional stewardship practices significantly contribute to how sustainability initiatives are planned, recorded, and evaluated. Furthermore, the personality traits of the local community—such as openness, cooperation, and strong social cohesion—play an essential role in ensuring inclusive participation and shared accountability. This study concludes that integrating cultural values and community character enhances the effectiveness of sustainable accounting practices in coastal tourism management and encourages long-term environmental and socio-economic resilience.

PurposeThis paper seeks to report on the evaluation of Zippy's Friends, an international emotional wellbeing programme, for primary school children in disadvantaged schools in Ireland. The paper aims to present case studies of the profile and ethos of two specific schools participating in the programme, their links with the local community, the degree of parental involvement and the factors that influence programme implementation in the local context.Design/methodology/approachWithin the framework of the overall evaluation study, which employs a randomised controlled design, two schools self‐selected to participate in case studies. Employing interviews and group discussions, the case study method was used to explore the views of teachers, pupils, parents and key informants from the wider community on the delivery of the programme within the context of a whole school approach.FindingsThe findings from two contrasting schools are presented, a large urban school with a multi‐cultural profile in an area of multiple disadvantage, and a smaller, almost monocultural, rural school on the border region with Northern Ireland. The findings reveal largely positive attitudes on the benefits of the programme and support for a whole school approach. The data indicate contrasting levels of parental involvement in the two schools and highlight the importance of socio‐ economic and cultural influences in the local communities and the challenges these present for effective implementation.Research limitations/implicationsThe paper explores the specific contextual factors in two schools and may, therefore, lack generalisability. However, this effort to focus on the specific local context is useful within the framework of the overall randomised control trial evaluation study.Practical implicationsThe reality of implementing an emotional wellbeing programme in disadvantaged school settings and effectively engaging teachers, parents and the wider community, is explored through the use of case study methods.Originality/valueThe paper explores the real‐life context of two schools participating in the Zippy's Friends programme and provides an insight into the contextual factors impacting on programme implementation in disadvantaged school settings.

Impact of the European Capital of Culture project on the image of the city of Novi Sad: The perception of the local community
  • Jan 1, 2021
  • Turizam
  • Sanja Kovačić + 5 more

Nowadays, the research focus is mainly on how tourists perceive the destination image, while the local community, as a very important key actor, is very often neglected in the studies. In light of the fact that Novi Sad has been declared the European Capital of Culture 2021, great attention has been placed on the local community and its perception of the European Capital of Culture (ECoC) influence on all aspects of the city's life, including city image. In this regard, during April and May 2018, a survey of residents of Novi Sad was conducted to explore their perception of the city's image - cognitive, affective, and overall. Moreover, the paper is focused on identifying the differences in the image perception on the basis of the respondents' socio-demographic characteristics. In this study, which is the beginning of a longitudinal study aiming to follow the influence of the ECoC project on the city image, a total of 797 respondents participated. The results of the research on the cognitive image indicate that the local community mostly agrees with the claims that Novi Sad is a pleasant place to live in, that it has a good gastronomic offer, is an attractive place for education, and that people are kind and hospitable. On the other hand, the smallest degree of agreement is observed with claims which refer to the living standard in the city. When it comes to tourism and culture, significant differences are observed between individual attributes. Also, research on the affective image shows that the city is perceived as relaxing, pleasant, exciting, and lively. The paper also shows that residents sociodemographic characteristics (age, education, monthly income, employment status) influence the image perception.

Understanding community attitudes towards volunteer tourism
  • Mar 23, 2020

  • Hiu Yan Lee

Volunteer tourism has been growing rapidly since the last decade. However, similar to other forms of tourism, volunteer tourism has been criticised for neglecting locals’ desires. As such, it is crucial to empower local communities and understand their needs, including their perceptions and attitudes towards volunteer tourism. Social representations have been used to examine community members’ ideas, their perceptions and the ways they think about tourism development. However, how local communities perceive alternative forms of tourism, including volunteer tourism have been under-researched. Using qualitative interviews with local residents in Mongolia, one of the post-Soviet countries and a fast-growing volunteer tourism destination in the world, this paper examines host communities’ general understanding and attitudes towards volunteerism and volunteer tourism development based on the perceived impacts, and considers how the social constructions of volunteerism underpin local residents’ perceptions of volunteer tourism. In addition, by investigating the historical and cultural influences in the host community, this article aims to pinpoint the relationship between social representations and cultural influences, offering an interesting insight to understand volunteer tourism development.

Trends in the socio-cultural dynamics of local communities in Russia
  • Jun 30, 2025
  • World of Science Series Sociology Philology Cultural Studies
  • Vladimir Shmakov

The article analyzes the features and trends of the socio-cultural dynamics of local communities that crystallize in the process of transformation of industrial, economic and institutional relations. Modernization of living conditions and changes in ownership forms determine the accumulation of destruction of traditional social and cultural markers, exerting a system-forming effect on the evolution of local communities. The intensification of the processes of integration of the multicultural world, the expansion of interaction and mutual influence of sociocultures provokes the algorithm of confrontation between traditional socio-cultural practices and modernization, integration initiatives in the socio-cultural environment. Sociocultural development trends are formed in the process of integration/disintegration of culture and sociality in an unstable society. In local communities, the evolution of socioculture reflects the state and functioning of the sociocultural environment, in the process of synthesizing traditions, innovations, and archaic patterns that determine the content and dynamics of emerging models with a duality of ontogenesis. Processes are being formed, on the scale of which the desire to preserve the basic traditional socio-cultural norms and principles is realized, to ensure the compatibility of socio-cultures and the integrity of traditions in the process of interaction. The fundamental sociocultural practices contain a certain potential for regulation, coordination and ensuring the sustainable development of the transforming sociocultural space. Modernization, stimulating the diversification of forms of ownership, determines the decomposition of traditional social and cultural relations, motivating the convergence of the foundations of the existence of a local community, determines the modification of traditional ways of existence and development, changing ideals, goals, and meanings of life. Sociocultural models of adaptation are crystallized, generating a breakdown of socio-cultural balance, disintegration of the local community, and the emergence of socio-cultural and economic contradictions. In local communities, conditions are developing for the formation of hybrid models of local development as a way of adaptation in the process of transition from a traditional to a modernized society. The defining feature of the transformation of the socio-cultural environment is the transitivity of positions, the decrease in the influence of traditional culture and sociality.

The Ritual Agency and Living Tradition of Aḍ-Ḍamm ‘Alā Qalb al-Qur’ān in Local Islamic Communities of Banyumas
  • Jul 31, 2025
  • Jurnal Studi Ilmu-ilmu Al-Qur'an dan Hadis
  • Mohamad Sobirin

This ethnographic research investigates the living tradition and protective belief (tolak bala’) associated with the Aḍ-Ḍamm ‘Alā Qalb al-Qur’ān manuscripts preserved in two pesantren mosques in Banyumas, Central Java, i.e., Al-Djazuli Pliken and Pasulukan Sokaraja Lor. Local Muslim communities believe that possessing or storing these sacred manuscripts safeguards individuals, households, and places of worship from disasters, particularly fire. Over time, this belief has transformed from an individual conviction into an institutionalized communal practice, representing an intersection of Islamic textual reverence and localized ritual protection. Distinct from prior studies that focus primarily on textual content or codicological features, this study emphasizes the material, social, and symbolic dimensions of these manuscripts as active agents within local religious life. Drawing on in-depth interviews, participant observation, and narrative analysis, this research demonstrates how these manuscripts function simultaneously as sacred texts, material amulets, and markers of Islamic identity. Theoretically, this study contributes to debates on the materiality of sacred texts, folk belief systems, and the construction of ritual protection within localized Islamic traditions. The findings illustrate how Penginyongan Muslim communities in Banyumas embody and sustain a living tradition in which Islamic manuscripts transcend their textual function and are integrated into everyday practices of spiritual protection. This localized synthesis of belief, ritual, and manuscript materiality offers new insights into the interplay between Islam, culture, and protective traditions in Southeast Asian Muslim societies.
