Abstract

The dynamics of a charged brownian particle in the field of a Coulomb potential is studied with an approximate solution of the Smoluchowski diffusion equation. The mean-square displacement 〈 r 2( t)〉 deviates markedly from the Einstein result 〈 r 2( t)〉 = 6 Dt, for an intermediate range of time. At time t → ∞, the Einstein result is recovered. Our calculation h some relevance, at a theoretical level, to the time decay of correlation in nonlinear stochastic dynamics, and at a practical level, to the dynamics of systems like charged colloids.
