Abstract

Nonlinear waves propagating in a plasma embedded in a strong radiation field are investigated and various physical situations are considered according to the relative strength of the coupling between plasma and radiation. For acoustic and radiative-acoustic waves the critical time for breaking is determined in the case of propagation into a constant state. Finally in the case of acoustic-radiative waves a Burgerstype equation is derived, by means of a suitable extension of the two-timing method.
