Abstract

When a plane wave is incident on the interface of two linear transparent media, the regime of transmission or total internal reflection (TIR) is realized depending on the relation between the refractive indices of the media and the angle of incidence. Taking the optical nonlinearity into account requires the statement of the principle of radiation for the field asymptotics far away from the medium interface. Consistent analysis is based on employing “the principle of limiting absorption”, i.e., the introduction of absorption into the bulk of the nonlinear medium which can be made arbitrarily small in the final results. It turns out that in addition to the two regimes known in linear optics, two new regimes — a hybrid regime and an oscillation regime — are also possible. This point has an impact on the form of bistability or multistability conditions.
