Abstract

Interaction of longitudinal waves in an elastic medium with inhomogeneous plane prestrain is investigated theoretically. Simultaneous propagation of two waves excited by tractions on opposite boundaries of the medium (structural element) is considered. An analytical solution to the one-dimensional problem of nonlinear propagation and interaction of waves is derived. Harmonic wave propagation in the prestrained medium is studied in detail. Influence of the prestrain on the sine-wave induced stress is cleared up on the boundaries of the medium. A method to estimate the parameters of the predeformed state is proposed.
