Abstract

The appearance of modulation instability in the propagation of amplitude and phase modulated signals in repeaterless fibre is shown. It is demonstrated that, in the anomalous dispersion region of the fibres, the signal degradation due to the effect of chromatic dispersion may be avoided in the nonlinear regime.
