Abstract

In visible light communication (VLC) systems, many adopted optoelectronic devices, such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and photodiodes, exhibit nonlinear characteristics that limit the system performance. Meanwhile, the high peak-to-average power ratio induced by orthogonal frequency division multiplexing modulation aggravates the nonlinear distortion, so mitigating the nonlinear distortion effects is desired. Aiming at the nonlinear characteristics of LEDs, we employ radial basis function (RBF) interpolation and propose a postdistortion method by combining RBF with memory effect depression (MED), which effectively suppresses the nonlinear and memory effects of LEDs. Simulation results show that the proposed RBF-MED is beneficial to the nonlinearity compensation in the VLC system, and it can deliver a better bit error rate performance compared with commonly-used memory polynomial and Volterra schemes.
