Abstract

Three surveys of the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) are of special interest to the members of TESOL: the Survey of Income and Education (SIE), the Teachers Language Skills Survey (TLSS), and the Survey of Institutions of Higher Education (IHE). Some preliminary findings from these surveys discussed in this paper are the following: An estimated 28 million persons (one in eight) in the United States have non-English language backgrounds; 10.6 million of these have Spanish language backgrounds. An estimated 2.4 million persons in the United States do not speak English at all. An estimated 102,000 teachers were involved in teaching English as a second language in public schools in 1976-77; only three out of ten had taken even one course in teaching ESL.
