The success of rukyatul hilal (moon sighting) is not only influenced by the physical aspects of the hilal (the crescent moon), but also depends on non-physical (non-astronomical) aspects. In the last 5 years, 7 out of 23 locations in East Java have contributed to sighting the hilal while other locations have experienced failures due to various constraints and obstacles. This paper evaluates these locations using geographical and topographical theories to delve into three main questions: the implementation of rukyatul hilal activities in East Java, the influence of geographical and topographical conditions of the locations, and the mapping of rukyatul hilal locations in East Java. Research data were measured and observed directly and indirectly using Google Earth with area sampling and non-probability sampling techniques. Research findings reveal that: first, rukyatul hilal is carried out at the beginning of each Hijri month by most observers at several locations during important months such as Ramadan, Shawwal, and Dhul Hijjah with the naked eye, while other locations use optical aids with low success rates; second, geographically, most rukyatul hilal locations in East Java are located near the equator with the main obstacle being disturbances from fog pollution, dust, clouds, rain, and other atmospheric particles; and third, out of 23 active rukyatul hilal locations in East Java mapped: a) locations categorized as observatories, with two observatories that do not fully contribute to moon observations, b) other hilal observation locations categorized as locations located on the north and south coast, with five locations that do not fully contribute to hilal observations, and c) other hilal observation locations categorized as locations located at high altitudes, with seven locations contributing to the implementation of hilal sighting and three locations dominating the production of hilal visibility more than once.

  • Jan 1, 2018
  • Santi Puteri Rahayu + 4 more

Java is one of the provinces that has the potential in Regency/City to sustain the national economy growth. To optimize the economic potential, cluster analysis is needed to comprehend the economic potential mapping of a region to accommodate the difference in economic growth occurred in each region. This research is executed to establish clusters of regency/city in East Java Province based on subsector variables chosen from the result of factor analysis from 6 main sectors of Gross Domestic Regional Product (GDRP) of East Java Province. In order to achieve the best cluster result, grouping to discover the mapping of economic potential (subsector with dominant contribution) in every cluster will be performed with Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) Cluster method that will be compared to conventional method C-means. Moreover, a comparison between clusters as the result based on chosen subsector variables with factor analysis and cluster result based on all of subsector variables (without factor analysis) will be performed. The research data is the GDRP of East Java province in 2015 obtained from Statistics Indonesia's catalogue with observation units of 28 regency/city (based on the result of data exploration test, 52.6% is outlier data). The result of the research showed that the use of factor analysis, both on FCM and C-means, produces better cluster result (smaller icd rate value). Furthermore, based on chosen subsector with factor analysis, the best cluster result (with the smallest icd rate value of 0.0040) is the one that applies FCM method with membership function of trapezoidal curve, with nine clusters as the optimum cluster. Based on the characteristics description, economic potential of regency/city in East Java province are food and beverage industry subsector and big trading and retail that is not cars/motorcycles subsector. Those lie in three or more cluster. Other than that, Surabaya as the capital city of East Java province has the most diverse economic potential.

The high crime rate will create unrest and losses for the community. One of the provinces with high crime rates is East Java. This study aims to analyze the factors that influence criminality in East Java to ensure appropriate crime prevention and control measures can be taken. The factors that potentially influence crime in East Java studied include population density, the number of poor people, unemployment, Human Development Index (HDI), Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP), and per Capita Expenditure, which are associated with geographical conditions in each region (regency/city) collected from BPS East Java in 2022. Meanwhile, the number of crimes is collected from the East Java Regional Police. This research uses a statistical method, namely the Spatial Durbin Model (SDM), which is a particular form of the Spatial Autoregressive Model (SAR) method with Queen Contiguity weighting by analyzing geographically (spatial processes). Based on the results of the analysis, it was found that the influential factors were unemployment, HDI, GRDP, and per Capita Expenditure, and the R-square result was obtained at 85.18%. This shows a relationship between spatial accessibility and crime, where unemployment, HDI, GRDP, and per Capita Expenditure in an area can affect regional vulnerability to crime
