Abstract

In 1908, Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov, the founder of evolutionary embryology, the discoverer of phagocytosis and intracellular digestion, received the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology. He described in detail the comparative etiopathology of the inflammatory process, as well as developed one of the initial concepts of aging. It was he who coined the term "gerontology", and he also made a serious contribution to the development of a diet based on the use of probiotics, which is aimed at gaining a long and healthy life. Supporters of life extension celebrate his birthday on May 15 as "Mechnikov's Day", and also use this day as a memorable date for organizing and holding various events promoting a healthy lifestyle
