Abstract

The microscopic magnetic properties of TiBe 2 have been investigated by 47 Ti and 49 Ti NMR at temperatures from 1.4 to 200 K. The Knight shift of the 47 Ti and 49 Ti resonances was found to be linear in the magnetic susceptibility with a hyperfine coupling constant of -24.3 kOe/spin. No appreciable change in the spectrum that might be associated with an onset of antiferromagnetic ordering could be observed down to 1.4 K, which is lower than the temperature corresponding to the previously observed anomalous peak in the specific heat. The results of our measurements suggest that TiBe 2 is a nearly ferromagnet.
