Abstract

The nature of a premelt phase in hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitroso-s-triazine (TRDX) between 365 and 385 K has been examined by /sup 1/H NMR spectroscopy. The second moment of TRDX in the premelt solid phase at 370 K is 6.0 x 10/sup 3/ Hz/sup 2/ (3.3 x 10/sup -4/ G/sup 2/), while in the liquid phase at 385 K the value is 2.0 x 10/sup 3/ Hz/sup 2/ (1.1 x 10/sup -4/ G/sup 2/). The second moment in the premelt solid phase is markedly smaller than values typical of organic plastic crystals indicating that, despite remaining a solid, limited molecular diffusion, as well as essentially free rotation, exists in the TRDX lattice. 18 references, 4 figures.
