Abstract

Abstract The loss of nitrogen by the way of denitrification in the water-logged rice soil was clarified by one of the present authors, M. SHIOIRI in 1941. On the other hand, rice soil was found to be rich in total nitrogen, and also rich in potential fertility of nitrogen than other soils. There must be many causes, which enable the water-logged rice soil fertile, against considerable loss of nitrogen in the rice soil. One of the causes of the gain of nitrogen in Japanese rice soil was attributed to the growth of blue-green algae in the surface water of the waterlogged rice soils.
