Abstract
In this chapter, Shakabpa is concerned to convey to the reader that the influence of the Manchu court and the ambans in Tibetan affairs was minimal. The ninth Dalai Lama was enthroned at the Potala Palace , the inestimable second mansion of Avalokiteśvara. Unfortunately, Regent Demo Rinpoche suddenly became ill with smallpox on the third day of the third month of 1819. During Lhasa 's Great Prayer Festival , the monks of Drepung , Sera, and Ganden monasteries and the people of Lhasa vigorously protested the young incarnation from Litang should be identified with certainty. The regent announced that the candidate from Shokdruk Drodong Tsang in Litang had been confirmed by the golden urn lottery . In fact, however, the golden urn lottery had not been used. Thereby, the tenth Dalai Lama was established at the Potala Palace , the inestimable second mansion of Avalokiteśvara.
